श्लोक 33.1

श्रीशिवमहापुराणम् ॥ ५.३३. त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तमोऽध्यायः ।कश्यपवंशवर्णनम् २ ।सूत उवाच ।एष मन्वन्तरे तात सर्गः स्वारोचिषे स्मृतः ।वैवस्वते तु महति वारुणे वित ते क्रतौ

They were terrible with huge bodies. They had the dazzling brilliance of the sun at the time of dissolution They had huge jaw bones. Their faces were hideous with curved fangs. They seemed to devour all the worlds.

जुह्वानस्य ब्रह्मणो वै प्रजासर्ग इहोच्यते ।पूर्वं यानथ ब्रह्मर्षीनुत्पन्नान् सप्त मानसान्

On seeing the earth covered by a great expanse of ocean they spoke to Keiava: — *'Kill us in a spot where the earth is not covered with water."

श्लोक 33.4

दितिर्विनष्टपुत्रा तु कश्यपं समुपस्थिता ।स कश्यपः प्रसन्नात्मा सम्गयगाराधितस्तया

O king, thus I have told you about the origin of Kalika. O intelligent one, listen to the origin of Maha- lakfmi now.

वरेणच्छन्दयामास सा च वव्रे वरं तदा ।पुत्रमिन्द्रवधार्थाय समर्थममितौजसम्

vareNachChandayAmAsa sA cha vavre varaM tadA | putramindravadhArthAya samarthamamitaujasam

Although free from aberrations, and devoid of forms and features, goddess Uma manifested herself in different Yugas for the destruction of the distress of the gods, after assuming different forms and features.

श्लोक 33.5.33.10

अकृत्वा पादयोः शौचं दितिरर्वाक्षिरास्तदा ।निद्रामाहारयामास भाविनोऽर्थस्य गौरवात्

akR^itvA pAdayoH shauchaM ditirarvAkShirAstadA | nidrAmAhArayAmAsa bhAvino.arthasya gauravAt

English

Thus I have described to you her manifestation in bodily form whose wish alone manifests as everything efficaciously. Thus she conducts her sports in that way and thereby gives chance to her devotees to describe her attributes.

श्लोक 33.5.33.20

द्विजानां वीरुधां चैव नक्षत्रग्रहयोस्तथा ।यज्ञानां तपसां चैव सोमं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयत्

dvijAnAM vIrudhAM chaiva nakShatragrahayostathA | yaj~nAnAM tapasAM chaiva somaM rAjye.abhyaShechayat

That king of Danavas defeated all the gods in battle and ruled over the kingdom of heaven seated on the throne of lord Indra.

श्लोक 33.5.33.30

तथा हिरण्यरोमाणं पर्जन्यस्य प्रजापतेः ।उदीच्यां दिशि राजानं दुर्धर्षं सोऽभ्यषेचयत्

tathA hiraNyaromANaM parjanyasya prajApateH | udIchyAM dishi rAjAnaM durdharShaM so.abhyaShechayat

The defeated gods sought refuge in Brahma. With them Brahma went to the place where Visnu and Siva* were present.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.6

स तस्यै च वरं प्रादात्प्रार्थितं सुमहातपाः ।ब्रह्मचर्य्यादिनियमं प्राह चैव शतं समाः

sa tasyai cha varaM prAdAtprArthitaM sumahAtapAH | brahmacharyyAdiniyamaM prAha chaiva shataM samAH

After reaching there and bowing to l§iva and Vi|nu the gods narrated all their woeful tale in the proper order.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.7

धारयामास गर्भं तु शुचिः सा वरवर्णिनी ।ब्रह्मचर्य्यादिनियमं दितिर्दध्रे तथैव वै

dhArayAmAsa garbhaM tu shuchiH sA varavarNinI | brahmacharyyAdiniyamaM ditirdadhre tathaiva vai

O lords, we are harassed by the wicked Mahia, We have been ousted from heaven after our defeat in the battle-field.

श्लोक 33.8

ततस्त्वाधाय सो दित्यां गर्भं तं शंसितव्रतः ।जगाम कश्यपस्तप्तुं तपः संहृष्टमानसः

tatastvAdhAya so dityAM garbhaM taM shaMsitavrataH | jagAma kashyapastaptuM tapaH saMhR^iShTamAnasaH

स पाट्यमानो गर्भोऽथ वज्रेण प्ररुरोद ह ।रुदन्तं सप्तधैकैकं मा रोदीरिति तान्पुनः ।चकर्त वज्रपाणिस्तान्नेव मम्रुस्तथापि ते

sa pATyamAno garbho.atha vajreNa praruroda ha | rudantaM saptadhaikaikaM mA rodIriti tAnpunaH | chakarta vajrapANistAnneva mamrustathApi te

On seeing the lotus-seated deity in the umbilical lotus*® of the lord, the two Asuras® shouted "Hey, who arc you?** and attempted to kill him.

श्लोक 33.13

ते तमूचुः पाट्यमानाः सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो मुने ।नो जिघांससि किं शक्र भ्रातरो मरुतस्तव

On seeing the two Daityas and observing that Visnu was still lying in the vast milky ocean,** Brahma eulogised ParameSvari.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.14

इन्द्रेण स्वीकृतास्ते हि भ्रातृत्वे सर्व एव च ।तत्यजुर्द्दैत्यभावं ते विप्रर्षे शङ्करेच्छया

O Mahamaya, save me, save me, O goddess favourably disposed to those who seek refuge in you, O mother of the universe, save me from these Daityas of hideous features.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.15

मरुतो नाम ते देवा बभूवुः सुमहाबलाः ।खगा एकोनपञ्चाशत्सहाया वज्रपाणिनः

maruto nAma te devA babhUvuH sumahAbalAH | khagA ekonapa~nchAshatsahAyA vajrapANinaH

English

I bow to the great Maya, the Yogic slumber, Uma, Sati, Kalaratri, Maharatri, Moharatri, greater than the greatest, the mother of the three deities, the eternal, the bestowcr of the fruits of the cherished desires of the devotees, the protectress of the gods and the ocean of mercy.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.16

तेषामेव प्रवृद्धानां हरिः प्रादात्प्रजापतिः ।क्रमशस्तानि राज्यानि पृथुपूर्वं शृणुष्व तत्

teShAmeva pravR^iddhAnAM hariH prAdAtprajApatiH | kramashastAni rAjyAni pR^ithupUrvaM shR^iNuShva tat

हिन्दी अर्थ

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

O Mother, you are Svaha, Svadha, Hri, the un¬ alloyed intellect, Tuti (satisfaction), Pusti nourishment), Sand (peace), Kanti (forbearance), Ksudha (hunger) and mercy itself.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.17

अरिष्टः पुरुषो वीरः कृष्णो जिष्णुः प्रजापतिः ।पर्जन्यस्तु धनाध्यक्षस्तस्य सर्वमिदं जगत्

ariShTaH puruSho vIraH kR^iShNo jiShNuH prajApatiH | parjanyastu dhanAdhyakShastasya sarvamidaM jagat

English

O mother, you are the Maya of Vi§nu, the very consciousness, the great Sakti, Lajja ( bashfulness ) and Tr?na ( thirst).

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.18

भूतसर्गमिमं सम्यगवोचं ते महामुने ।विभागं शृणु राज्यानां क्रमशस्तं ब्रुवेऽधुना

bhUtasargamimaM samyagavochaM te mahAmune | vibhAgaM shR^iNu rAjyAnAM kramashastaM bruve.adhunA

हिन्दी अर्थ

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

You arc Bhranti (Illusion). You appear in the form of Smrti (Memory): you stay assuming the form of mother. You are LaksmI in the house of those who engage themselves in meritorious activities.

अध्याय ९

श्लोक 33.19

अभिषिच्याधिराज्ये तु पृथुं वैन्यं पितामहः ।ततः क्रमेण राज्यानि व्यादेष्टुमुपचक्रमे

abhiShichyAdhirAjye tu pR^ithuM vainyaM pitAmahaH | tataH krameNa rAjyAni vyAdeShTumupachakrame

English

Sprung from the ears of Viriu while he was, asleep at the end of a Kalpa, Madhu and Kaitabha were about to kill Brahma but were killed by Vi;pu. Prof. Agrawal however offers a symbolical interpretation of Madhu and Kaitabha as Rajas and Tamas-

अपां तु वरुणं राज्ये राज्ञां वैश्रवणं प्रभुम् ।आदित्यानां तथा विष्णुं वसूनामथ पावकम्

apAM tu varuNaM rAjye rAj~nAM vaishravaNaM prabhum | AdityAnAM tathA viShNuM vasUnAmatha pAvakam

English

Youare Jati (Birth), Vytti (cause of activity) and VySpti (pervasiveness. ) You pervade everything in the form of intelligence.

श्लोक 33.22

प्रजापतीनां दक्षं तु मरुतामथ वासवम् ।दैत्यानां दानवानां च प्रह्लादममितौजसम्

prajApatInAM dakShaM tu marutAmatha vAsavam | daityAnAM dAnavAnAM cha prahlAdamamitaujasam

हिन्दी अर्थ

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

O Mother, please delude these unthwartable Asuras. O origin of the universe, please waken Vi§9u the unborn lord."

श्लोक 33.23

वैवस्वतं पितॄणां च यमं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ।मातॄणां च व्रतानां च मन्त्राणां च तथा गवाम्

vaivasvataM pitR^INAM cha yamaM rAjye.abhyaShechayat | mAtR^INAM cha vratAnAM cha mantrANAM cha tathA gavAm

हिन्दी अर्थ

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

O king, on being requested by Brahma for the destruction of Madhu and Kaifabha, the mother of the universe, the great Vidya, the presiding deity of all Vidyas, Sakti the enchantress of the three worlds manifested herself as Mahikali on the twelfth Tithi of the bright half of the month of Phalguna.

श्लोक 33.24

यक्षाणां राक्षसानां च पार्थिवानां तथैव च ।सर्वभूतपिशाचानां गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम्

yakShANAM rAkShasAnAM cha pArthivAnAM tathaiva cha | sarvabhUtapishAchAnAM girishaM shUlapANinam

English

Then a celestial voice arose: — "O lotus-seated one, do not be afraid. I shall remove the thorn after killing Madhu and Kaitabha in the battle."

श्लोक 33.25

शैलानां हिमवन्तं च नदीनामथ सागरम् ।मृगाणामथ शार्दूलं गोवृषं तु गवामपि

shailAnAM himavantaM cha nadInAmatha sAgaram | mR^igANAmatha shArdUlaM govR^iShaM tu gavAmapi

After saying this and coming out of the eyes, mouth etc. of Vijnu, the great Maya stood before Brahma of unmanifested birth.

वनस्पतीनां वृक्षाणां वटं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ।इति दत्तं प्रजेशेन राज्यं सर्वत्र वै क्रमात्

vanaspatInAM vR^ikShANAM vaTaM rAjye.abhyaShechayat | iti dattaM prajeshena rAjyaM sarvatra vai kramAt

English

Vijnu, the lord of gods stood up and saw in front of him the Daityas Madhu and Kaitabha.

श्लोक 33.27

पूर्वस्यां दिशि पुत्रं तु वैराजस्य प्रजापतेः ।स्थापयामास सर्वात्मा राज्ये विश्वपतिर्विभुः

pUrvasyAM dishi putraM tu vairAjasya prajApateH | sthApayAmAsa sarvAtmA rAjye vishvapatirvibhuH

English

A battle ensued between Visnu of unequalled splendour and the two Daityas lasting for five thousand years. Then there ensued a hand-to-hand fight.

तथैव मुनिशार्दूल कर्दमस्य प्रजापतेः ।दक्षिणस्यां तथा पुत्रं सुधन्वानमचीक्लृपत्

Deluded by the powerful great Maya, the excellent Danava spoke to the lord Vi?nu — "Ask for whatever boon you desire to choose."

पश्चिमायां दिशि तथा रजसः पुत्रमच्युतम् ।केतुमन्तं महात्मानं राजानं व्यादिशत्प्रभुः

pashchimAyAM dishi tathA rajasaH putramachyutam | ketumantaM mahAtmAnaM rAjAnaM vyAdishatprabhuH

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

If you are pleased with me grant me this boon that I may kill you. I do not request for any other boon.

तस्य विस्तारमाख्यातं पृथोर्वैन्यस्य शौनक ।महर्ध्यै तदधिष्ठानं पुराणं परिकीर्तितम्

tasya vistAramAkhyAtaM pR^ithorvainyasya shaunaka | mahardhyai tadadhiShThAnaM purANaM parikIrtitam

After giving his consent the lord lifted up his dazzling discus, placed their heads on his loins and cut them off.

सूत उवाच ।स्वायम्भुवो मनुश्चैव ततः स्वारोचिषस्तथा ।उत्तमस्तामसश्चैव रैवतश्चाक्षुषस्तथा

English

Kala gave her a sword and a shining shield, the milk ocean a beautiful necklace, two fresh pieces of cloth, the crest-jewel, car-rings, bangles, crescent-shaped ornaments, beautiful anklets, shoulder-pieces, a necklace and finger-rings. Visvakarman gave her a beautiful axe and the ocean various weapons, an impenetrable armour, a beauti¬ ful garland and a lotus.

श्लोक 34.3

एते च मनवः षट् ते सम्प्रोक्ता मुनिपुङ्गव ।वैवस्वतो मुनिश्रेष्ठ साम्प्रतं मनुरुच्यते

ete cha manavaH ShaT te samproktA munipu~Ngava | vaivasvato munishreShTha sAmprataM manuruchyate

English

Different weapons and missiles hurled by the hosts of enemies were rendered futile instantaneously by the power of the goddess.

श्लोक 34.4

सावर्णिश्च मनुश्चैव ततो रौच्यस्तथा परः ।तथैव ब्रह्मसावर्णिश्चत्वारो मनवस्तथा

sAvarNishcha manushchaiva tato rauchyastathA paraH | tathaiva brahmasAvarNishchatvAro manavastathA

हिन्दी अर्थ

॥ समाप्तेयं पञ्ञम्युमासंहिता

English

Wielding Maya, he became a lion. Soon as Ambika tried to cut off his head he became armed with a sword.

श्लोक 34.5

तथैव धर्मसावर्णी रुद्रसावर्णिरेव च ।देवसावर्णिराख्यात इन्द्रसावर्णिरेव च

tathaiva dharmasAvarNI rudrasAvarNireva cha | devasAvarNirAkhyAta indrasAvarNireva cha

English

Still he continued to fight. His head was cut off with the sword and he was felled down on the ground.

English

Crying "Alas! Alas" loudly, his followers, afraid of the battle fled from the scene shouting "Save us, O save us'.

ऋषयोऽत्र समाख्याताः कीर्त्यमानान्निबोध मे ।औत्तमेया ऋषिश्रेष्ठ दश पुत्रा मनोः स्मृताः

O king, thus the origin of MahalaksmI has been narrated to you. Now listen to the origin of Sarasvati with a calm mind.

सावर्णेश्च मनोः पुत्रा भविष्या दश शौनक ।इहाष्टमं हि कथितं नवमं चान्तरं शृणु
