Hunger and thirst — primal drives — are not given their own organ but assigned as 'partners' to every deity. Hence every offering nourishes them indirectly. The drives pervade all faculties — a sharp psychological insight.
Hunger and thirst said to him: 'Find a place for us too.' He said to them: 'I assign you a share in these very deities; I make you partners with them.' Therefore, whatever deity receives an oblation, hunger and thirst share in it.

Simple explanation
Editorial explanation, not scripture
Modern reflection
Editorial reflection, not scripture

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
