karma · Karma

Plain Definition

The universal moral and metaphysical law of cause and effect, where every intentional action of thought, speech, and deed generates matching fruit and shapes future consciousness.

Etymology & Derivation

मूल धातु (Verbal Root):कृ (kṛ)(To do, make, perform, or execute — करना, रचना, आचरण करना)

English Analysis

Formed from root "kṛ" (to do) + suffix "man". Grammatically signifies an intentional action, as well as the latent imprint (samskāra) left in the causal mind.

karmaṇyevādhikāraste mā phaleṣu kadācana | mā karmaphalaheturbhūrmā te saṅgo'stvakarmaṇi ||

English Translation

You have a right only to perform your prescribed duty; the fruits thereof are never your entitlement. Let not the fruit of action be your motive, nor let attachment to inaction take hold of you.

४.५Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.4.5

yathākārī yathācārī tathā bhavati — sādhukārī sādhur bhavati, pāpakārī pāpo bhavati | puṇyaḥ puṇyena karmaṇā bhavati, pāpaḥ pāpena ||

English Translation

According as one acts and according as one behaves, so does one become. The doer of good becomes good; the doer of evil becomes evil. One becomes virtuous by virtuous deeds, and unrighteous by unrighteous deeds.

Philosophical Diversity

Advaita Vedanta

The pure Atman is non-acting (Akarta) and untouched by karma. Karma belongs to the ego-mind vehicle (Upadhi). When knowledge of the Self dawns, all accumulated Sanchita karma is dissolved.

Nyaya-Vaisheshika

Karma operates as an unseen moral potency (Adrishta). Because karma itself is insentient, God (Ishvara) serves as the impartial dispenser of fruits matching exact justice.

Clarifications & Debunking

Common Misunderstanding

“Karma is fatalism; since everything is pre-ordained by past karma, personal effort is useless.”

Scriptural Clarification

Karma is the exact opposite of fatalism: it is radical responsibility. While past karma forms present circumstances (Prarabdha), our conscious response right now (Purushartha) shapes future destiny completely.

Common Misunderstanding

“You can blame victims of injustice or tragedy by saying "it was just their karma".”

Scriptural Clarification

Scripture commands compassion and immediate help. When another suffers, our duty (Dharma) is to alleviate their distress; withholding help creates negative karma for us.
