One of the most beautiful passages in the Upanishads. By the social conventions of the time, a child without a known father was excluded from Vedic learning. But Satyakama, asked his lineage, simply spoke the embarrassing truth as his mother had taught him. The teacher Gautama — confronted with this unflinching honesty — declared that the boy was a Brahmana by the very act of truth-telling. The Upanishad makes the radical statement: brahmana-hood is earned by truth, not by birth.

"None but a Brahmana could speak so. Bring the firewood, dear one — I will initiate you. You have not departed from truth."

A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
