Om. In a pure place, pure, established in goodness, studying the true, speaking the true, meditating on the true, sacrificing to the true — let him be so. Therefore, established in the true Brahman, longing for the true, freed from the fruits of action, with bonds cut, without expectation, fearless toward others as toward himself, free from desire, he stands, having reached imperishable, immeasurable happiness. Freedom from desire is the supreme rescue, as if from a treasure-house of the Supreme. The Person full of all desires, marked by determination, intention and self-conceit, is bound; therefore the opposite is liberated. Here some say: bound by the difference in the qualities of Nature, the self falls into bondage through determination; from the destruction of the faults of determination there is liberation. By the mind alone one sees, by the mind alone one hears; desire, intention, doubt, faith, faithlessness, steadiness, unsteadiness, shame, wisdom and fear — all this is the mind. Carried along by floods of qualities, defiled, unsteady, fickle, greedy, longing and distracted, it falls into conceit, thinking, "I am he; this is mine," and binds the self by the self, like a bird in a net. Therefore the Person, marked by determination, intention and self-conceit, is bound; the opposite is liberated. Therefore let one remain without determination, without intention, without self-conceit — this is the mark of liberation. This is here the way to Brahman; this is here the door-opening; by this one goes beyond this darkness. Here all desires are gathered. On this they quote: "When the five kinds of knowledge stand still together with the mind, and the intellect does not stir — that they call the highest state." Having said this, Shakayanya, inward in heart, bowed to him; the king, having duly served him, his task done, went north; for there is no going by a devious path here. This is the way of Brahman here; having pierced the door of the sun, they go out upward — on this they quote: "Endless are his rays, standing like a lamp in the heart — white and black, tawny and blue, brown, and softly red. Of them one stands upward; whoever, piercing the orb of the sun and passing beyond the world of Brahma, goes by it, goes to the highest state. The other hundred rays stand upward; by them one enters the abodes of the hosts of gods. Those rays of soft light that are of many forms and below — by them, here, for the enjoyment of action, the helpless one wanders." Therefore that venerable sun is the cause of creation, heaven and release.
