English Translation

The soul is never born, nor does it die at any time. It has not come to be, nor does it cease to be. Unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval, it is not slain when the body is slain.

Philosophical Diversity

Advaita Vedanta

There is only one universal Atman; the multiplicity of souls is an illusion caused by the limiting adjuncts of body-minds (Upadhis), like space enclosed in jars.

Vishishtadvaita Vedanta

Individual souls (Jivatmans) are real, conscious, eternal sparks (Amsha) of God, existing in organic relationship as His divine body.

Samkhya

There is a plurality of pure conscious witnesses (Purushas), forever independent of material nature (Prakriti).

Atman is not a material object with dimensions; it is non-physical pure awareness itself, omnipresent and formless.
